Mrs. Duckie and Rupert waiting to see Dr. Rich.

Mrs. Duckie's been looking rather ragged lately. You can see the lack of feathering on her wings in the picture. Her eggs have been coming out way too thin. We've been trying to incubate a bunch of eggs from her and from one of her daughters, and it turned out about halfway thru the process that almost none of her eggs were fertilized. What finally made me take her to the vet was the fact that she has been very antisocial lately. Keeping to herself and not moving around or sleeping with the others. This is VERY unusual behavior for a duck.

We went to see Dr. Rich, the local exotics vet. Mostly he sees things like parrots and guinea pigs and lizards, but he said he does get the occasional chicken or duck. It was a very interesting experience watching him draw blood from her leg. (Yep, I paid for bloodwork on a duck.)

He was thinking a uteren infection or something like that , but the results of her bloodwork were low normals. He also said she was very 'slack' underneath. Best guess is that she has burned out her uterus from laying so damn much. (Almost an egg a day, year round!) He suggested she be separated from the others for a while just to give her a break from the boys' constant pestering. Hopefully this will be enough to have her feeling better soon.
